Justice, reconciliation, and amnesty in President Assad’s speech

Assad the dictator is no fan of justice. He knows that he can manipulate democracy by naming it the ‘popular democracy’ and reducing it to supervised and rigged elections. Assad can also mold ‘patriotism’ and ‘resistance,’ as needed turning them into mere clichés set against ‘Zionism’ and ‘colonialism.’ As for justice: it has but one meaning. It is this meaning that Assad is trying to escape.

Kurds hold their second conference on Thursday

The Kurdish National Council (KNC) will hold its second conference on January 10 to discuss the Kurdish position vis-à-vis Islamist groups and other Kurdish groups.

Pro government loyalist Parties praise Assad’s initiative as a “way out of the crisis”

The ruling al-Baath Party and other pro-government parties praised President Assad’s speech last Sunday, and described it as an “expression of the Syrian people and their desire for preserving Syria’s unity, reclaiming its role, and building its future.” In the meantime, Information Minister Omran al-Zohbi renewed a call for opposition figures to enter into a dialogue for peace offered by President Bashar Assad, despite domestic and rebel groups already rejecting the proposal.

Syria: The Forest and the Trees

Because Syria is a country of paramount importance, the issue there is not just about toppling the regime, while retaining the same inherited and historical structure, including the ideology, of the regime itself. Indeed, we are dealing here with a smaller version of countries like Germany and Japan after the Second World War, in that they were countries whose internal circumstances led them to destabilise their regions and subsequently the world.

Internal opposition joins the external one in rejecting Assad’s plan

Hasan Abdul Azim, Coordinator –general of the National Coordination Commission (NCC) rejected in a press conference he held in Damascus any “direct dialogue or negotiations with the regime,” stressing that negotiations can only happen through the UN Envoy, Lakhdar Brahimi.
