Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs called Wednesday upon the UN and the UN Security Council member states to condemn the terrorist crimes in Syria, including the massacre committed against Aleppo University students, employees and citizens who took refuge there.

Addressing two identical letters to the President of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary General, the ministry said that the victims of the terrorist attack against the University of Aleppo are students who were on their first day of exams and they have no guilt but that they are continuing their educational attainment and prepare themselves to take part in their country's progress and building its future.

"On the afternoon of Tuesday, January, 15th, 2013, the armed terrorist groups targeted the University of Aleppo with two rocket shells from al-Lairamoun neighborhood, causing the martyrdom of 82 students and the injury of hundreds," the Ministry said in its letters.

"While some parties, particularly in western countries, claim to combat terrorism in Mali – which we support – they support this terrorism and the same terrorist groups in Syria and cover its supporters regardless of the suffering of the Syrian people,” the letter added.

The Syrian opposition blamed the regime for the University massacre. The Local Co-ordination Committees (LCC), an opposition activist network, posted a link to an online video which purported to show warplanes bombing the campus.

It showed students walking quickly away from the university after the first explosion. The camera then shakes to the sound of another explosion and people begin running.

"The warplanes of this criminal regime do not respect a mosque, a church or a university," a student who gave his name as Abu Tayem told the Reuters news agency.
