Secretary-General of the Syrian Opposition Coalition (SOC), Haytham Rahmeh, denounced the calls of the United Nations Special Rapporteur, Alena Douhan, for lifting the sanctions of the murderous Assad regime under the pretext of eliminating the impact of sanctions on human rights. He stressed that these calls represent a bias towards the Assad regime and its allies and their misleading narrative in this context.
Rahmeh said that Douhan’s calls laid bare her ignorance of the Syrian reality and her support for the Assad regime’s crimes against the Syrian people. He pointed out that Douhan’s methodology is not impartial as she ignores the countless crimes that the Assad regime and its allies committed in Syria over eleven years.
UN Special Rapporteur: Unilateral Measures Imposed on Syrian People Hamper Early Recovery Efforts
“We were waiting for the United Nations committees to visit the Maram camp for the internally displaced people in rural Idlib, which the Assad regime and Russia bombed a few days ago, killing and injuring dozens of civilians. Instead, she visited the criminals and has been trying for two years to save the tyrannical Assad regime from sanctions with her impartial statements.”
Rahmeh added: “The UN’s strategy in Syria is neither impartial nor neutral, and it is one of the reasons for prolonging the suffering of the Syrian people.”
Rahmeh stressed the need for maintaining the sanctions against the Assad regime because it is one of the ways to pressure it into engaging in the political process. He also stressed the need to exercise all forms of pressure to ensure the implementation of UN resolutions in Syria, especially UN Resolution 2254.
