United Nations Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura condemned the Syrian regime's targeting of civilians after his three-day visit to Damascus to discuss a political solution for the Syrian crisis.
De Mistura's office confirmed in a statement that the envoy’s visit to the capital was part of an effort to activate the terms of the Geneva communiqué, issued on June 30, 2012. The statement stressed de Mistura's conviction that "there is no solution to the Syrian conflict except a comprehensive political settlement, and there is no solution to be imposed by force".
De Mistura's statement noted the dire humanitarian situation facing Syria, namely the problems in the delivery of humanitarian aid to besieged areas.
During his visit to Damascus, de Mistura met with President Bashar al-Assad, Foreign Minister Walid Muallem, Syrian religious figures, and representatives of more than 30 political parties and civil society organizations.
