On Monday, a child from the city of Maarat al-Numan was killed after being hit in the neck by Turkish border guards while trying to enter Turkish territory illegally.

Sources close to the child’s family told Zaman al-Wasl that 15-year-old Maher Ammar Barbash was killed early on Monday after being punched in the neck by Turkish border guards while trying to enter Turkish territory illegally from the border area of Harem north of the Idleb governorate.

Zaman al-Wasl obtained a video of the child as his body arrived at his relatives’ home for his funeral. The video showed the impact on the child’s neck, which he had suffered from the Turkish border guards.

Maher is from what is considered to be a poor family. He left Maarat al-Numan early last year and decided to enter Turkish territory illegally in order to find a job and help his family to meet their daily expenses as a result of the desperate economic situation in Idlib, where poor living conditions persist. Seven years ago, Maher’s mother and sister died in artillery shelling in the city of Maarat al-Numan, south of Idlib.
