De Mistura's Request to Turkey to Open Borders 'Noble': NCC

Munther Khaddam says request by Syria envoy to open the Turkish border for volunteers to fight against ISIS was unusual

The spokesman of the Coordination Commission for Democratic Change Forces (NCC) has welcomed the request by the U.N. Special Envoy to Syria for the Turkish authorities to allow Kurdish fighters to enter Syria to defend a city with a Kurdish majority, describing the goal as "noble".

The U.N. envoy, Staffan de Mistura, has appealed to the Turkish authorities to allow the flow of volunteers and their weapons to be able to enter the city of Ayn al-Arab (Kobani) and participate in the defense of the city which faces the forces of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The appeal is considered by some observers as contrary to international laws and norms, and similar to the principle of opening the borders for ISIS fighters.

The NCC spokesman, Munther Khaddam, told AKI that "the direct statements of the international envoy to Syria regarding the opening of the Turkish border for volunteers to fight against ISIS were really unexpected and unusual in international relations. However, this cannot be compared with Turkey opening its borders to terrorists to enter Syria and Iraq".

Khaddam described the entry of non-Syrian fighters to fight ISIS as a "noble goal, a fight against ISIS, which the Security Council declared a war against. Probably de Mistura made the statement in order to put pressure on Turkey to participate in the international campaign".

De Mistura had warned that thousands of people "will be probably slaughtered " if Kobani fell to the fundamentalists, and that the fate of the city may resemble the fate of the town of Srebrenica, where 8,000 Muslims were killed at the hands of Serbs in 1995, when the international peacekeeping forces failed to protect them.

De Mistura pointed to the existence of 12,000 civilians, in addition to the fighters, in the city.
