Muallem to de Mistura: Eliminating Terrorism is Syria’s Priority

Syrian foreign minister meets with UN envoy to review progress of the consultative meetings regarding a peaceful political solution in Syria

Speaking to UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Thursday, Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem stressed eliminating terrorism in Syria is the government’s top priority.

De Mistura visited Damascus to brief the Syrian government on the results of the envoy’s consultative meetings held in several countries in an attempt to find a political solution to the crisis.

The envoy is expected to present an update on his efforts to the UN Security Council late this month.

Muallem, for his part, assessed the latest developments and renewed Syria’s support towards de Mistura’s peace efforts.

Syria, he said, stills sees that eliminating terrorism and drying up its funding and support sources are the major priority.

The foreign minister recalled Syria’s support for the initiative launched by President Vladimir Putin that aims to form a regional effort to fight terrorism throughout the Middle East.

Muallem stressed that the people and army of Syria will remain steadfast while defending its security and stability and those of the region.
