Russia-NATO to Discuss Political Solution in Syria: Gruskho

Russia's permanent representative to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), Alexander Grushko, said that a Russia-NATO council will discuss, at the level of foreign ministers, the crisis in Syria on 4 November.

Grushko said the discussions will be held within the framework of international conditions for supporting the implementation of U.N. Security Council Resolution No. 2118 related to destroying the chemical weapons in Syria.

In a statement in Brussels quoted by the Russian Interfax News Agency, Brushko said: "I think the ministers will discuss prospects of a diplomatic solution to the crisis in Syria including the international conference, Geneva II."

He pointed out that an important dialogue took place on 20 October between representatives of the Russia-NATO council member states and Sigrid Kaag, the Special Coordinator of the Joint Mission of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) and the U.N. to Syria.

"It is obvious that the international help… [and] the need to provide a security atmosphere, are the main conditions for achieving the objective of destruction of the chemical weapons in Syria," he added.
