On Monday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan announced that his country would support the setting up of housing areas in northern Syria to house a million Syrians.

The comments were made during a speech before social affairs ministers at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation in Istanbul, according to the Anadolu News agency.

The agency quoted Erdogan as saying that he would give support to set up new residential areas in northern Syria.

He added: “We have started work to house a million people in the cities of Tel Abyad and Ras al-Ayn.”

He said that Turkey had spent about 40 billion dollars on Syrian refugees, while the European Union had given only three billion euros.

He said that his country was unable to handle the burden of Syrian refugees and displaced in the camps.

Turkish forces took control over areas in northeastern Syria during Operation Peace Spring, launched to expel Kurdish militias from border areas.
