Turkish Authorities Prepare to Close Five Refugee Camps

Media outlets have reported that Turkish authorities will close five Syrian refugee camps and relocate the inhabitants to camps near the Syrian border.

The Turkish Karar newspaper reported that on Tuesday, the General Directorate for Migration had decided to move five camps, three of them in Gaziantep province in southern Turkey. They are the Nizip, Aslahiyah and Karkamis camps, in addition to two other camps, one in Adiyaman province and another in Mardin.

It said that the Gaziantep camps included 23,095 refugees, while the Adiyaman camp included 8,627 people and the Mardin camp included 2,458 people.

It added that a group of 34,180 people would be moved to camps close to the Syrian border in the provinces of Hatay, Kilis and Sanliurfa.

According to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Turkey is hosting the largest number of refugees in the world, with Syrians comprising the majority, with more than three million.
