Ahrar al-Sham Rebel Group Elects New Leader

The Shura Council of Ahrar al-Sham Islamic Movement elected Muhannad al-Masri as the new leader for the Movement on Saturday, September 12, following the resignations of Jaber Abu ash-Sheikh after a number of the group’s prominent figures were recently assassinated.

Muhannad al-Masri, nicknamed Abu Yahya al-Hamwi, was born in al-Madiq Castle in al-Ghab Plain in the countryside of Hama. Masri studied civil engineering at the University of Lattakia, and has been appointed as assistant to the commander of the Movement for the past year.

Ahrar al-Sham Movement, a major rebel group in Syria with a presence in most of the opposition-held cities and towns, recently cooperated with other opposition factions for joint control of Idleb province.
