The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) announced that they have surrounded the Islamic State’s (ISIS) last area in Deir ez-Zor province under the control of the extremist group, and are preparing to launch a new military operation to end the organization’s presence in the eastern area.
In a statement carried by the forces’ media platform, official SDF spokesman Kino Gabriel said: “The SDF are preparing to launch the third stage of Operation Al-Jazira Storm within days.”
The official added: “We have sent reinforcements to the town of al-Hajin and the surrounding villages, while forces are combing the area in preparation to begin a military operation on the three remaining towns.” He said that “time is up for the Islamic State’s presence east of the Euphrates.”
ISIS attacked SDF positions in the al-Malh oil well area in an attempt to advance toward the residential area in the al-Omar oil field.
The extremist group has lost most of the areas under its influence in Syria and Iraq, with the exception of some small towns in the area of Albu Kamal and east of the Euphrates on the border between the two countries.
