Syria’s permanent envoy to the UN, Dr. Bashar al-Jaafari said on Tuesday that the international community’s failure to properly apply responsibility to protect (R2P) measures in Libya changed the country into a hotbed for extremism and a center for exporting terrorism to other countries, including Syria.
He affirmed that the use of terms like “non-state armed groups” does not change the reality that the Islamic State, Nusra Front, Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, Jaish al-Fatah and other affiliated organizations are terrorist entities confronted by the Syrian state.
Jaafari went on to say that the notion of the responsibility to protect has lost its credibility as a result of politicization and the trends of hegemony.
He concluded by affirming that the Syrian government is going ahead in performing its constitutional duties and responsibilities in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as protecting the safety of its citizens through confronting the terrorist organizations.
