Syrian human rights lawyer Abdullah al-Khalil disappeared in May 2013, 75 days after the eastern city of Raqqa was liberated and regime forces expelled from the area.
Khalil’s whereabouts and condition remain unknown until this day.
As one of the most prominent revolutionary figures in Raqqa, Khalil hastened to announce his alignment with the revolution from the beginning of the movement, a position which he paid for with regime harassment and repeated detention.
After Raqqa was liberated, Khalil was appointed as local council president, a position equitable to that of city governor.
Seen by many as a political activist defending freedoms, others, namely the Islamic State group, considered him a possible threat and placed him under surveillance. Ironically, it was these same people with whom Khalil celebrated the liberation of Raqqa.
