Powerful Syrian businessman Rami Makhlouf has begun legal consultations with senior legal counsel to try to regain his Cyprian nationality, withdrawn by the Cyprus government
Informed sources said that Makhlouf, who is a cousin of Bashar Assad, has sent a message to the Cyprian government via his legal representation, apologizing for failing to visit Cyprus to follow-up and provide official testimony on his case personally.
Makhlouf has sent a legal delegation to Cyprus, consisting of Cyprian and Syrian lawyers, following consultation in the Jordanian capital, Amman.
Reports said that the Cyprian government has refused to deal with the legal agents he has appointed on his behalf, and has insisted on Makhlouf's personal attendance to provide testimony regarding the accusations that led to the withdrawal of his Cyprian nationality.
It appears that Makhlouf is concerned how the Cypriat decision may influence international and European sanctions over him for his alleged role in supporting the Syrian regime, and is trying to regain his Cyprian citizenship in every possible legal way.
