More than 1000 people have been killed in 13 days of government airstrikes on the northern Syrian city of Aleppo and its countryside, the Syrian Revolution General Commission said Thursday.
Most of the victims were civilians, and many women and children have been killed. Over 200 barrel bombs have been dropped from government helicopters, the Commission said in a statement posted online.
500 families have been displaced by the attack, the statement said.
Barrel bombs are explosive-filled cylinders or oil drums that are often rolled off the back of helicopters with little discrimination. They cause massive destruction on impact and large numbers of casualties.
Syria's armed uprising began as a series of peaceful democracy protests 33 months ago but escalated into a full-blown civil war after Assad's regime launched a brutal crackdown on dissent.
The conflict is estimated to have killed around 126,000 people and displaced millions more.
