Lavrov, Kerry Press Conference in Geneva

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said that Syria has applied to join the Organization of the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), adding that Russia is confident that the U.S. would follow the correct path on Syria.

At a joint press conference with his U.S. counterpart, John Kerry, in Geneva, Lavrov said: "Work must be done to convene the Geneva II conference through the attendance of all Syrian sides and the formation of a transitional government agreed on by both sides."

"We support diplomacy as it requires silence and accord…the U.S. position shows willingness to reach consensus on the Syrian issue and to achieve success," Lavrov said.

Kerry said that a peaceful solution must be pursued through a timetable, adding that the U.S. favors stability over military action.

"We have come to Geneva to specify the context and track of work for solution in Syria, and we are serious about getting involved in continuous and meaningful negotiations," Kerry said.
