Russia Wants Syria Unified, Independent and Secular: Lavrov

Lavrov warns Jihadis could threaten their country of origin after Syria

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned of the threat posed by the foreign mercenaries and jihadists who are fighting among the terrorist groups in Syria, saying the threat could extend to all countries, including their home countries.

"The jihadists come from many European countries, Russia included, and some even from the United States. Hundreds of them — if you take Europe, Russia and the U.S. — are fighting in the ranks of extremist groups," Lavrov told the Washington Post in an interview published on Thursday.

"I am sure they are gaining the experience which they will try to use after the Syrian crisis is over elsewhere, first and foremost in their home countries," he warned.

Lavrov stressed that everyone now and not just the United States understands this threat, which motivates people to convene Geneva II.
