Lawyers Call for War Crimes Court

The Islamic Commission of Lawyers organized a conference this week on “International law and its application in the Syrian crisis", calling for the formation of a special criminal court for the trial of members of the Syrian regime.

The scholars called for a court similar to the courts that tried war criminals in the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda, to try members of the Syrian regime for “crimes against humanity, war crimes and genocide committed against the Syrian people”.

Attendees stressed the importance of documenting evidence and facts about crimes committed in Syria through independent commissions of inquiry, using qualified personnel with the “requisite skill and know-how".

They called for the formation of an international legal team formed from members of the conference “to follow up on these recommendations and perform the functions of technical and legal aspects of bringing criminals to trial."

According to the Secretary General of the Commission, Khalid al-Tawyan, the conference was the result of the inability of the international community to enforce international law and punish the perpetrators of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity committed in Syria.”
