German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier has highlighted the need to support a political solution to the crisis in Syria along with the military operations carried out by the international coalition against the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).
In a press conference with his U.S. Counterpart John Kerry in Berlin on Wednesday, Steinmeier expressed his country’s support to the U.N. Special Envoy for Syria, adding that it is “not easy” to deal with the issue of hundreds of Europeans and Americans who have been joining ISIS.
He said such an issue needs an increased level of cooperation among all countries as thousands of youths travel to Turkey every year, and intelligence agencies are not able to determine who among them is there on an ordinary vacation or on their way to join terrorist organizations.
