Syrian Parliament Passes Consumer Protection Bill

The People’s Assembly approved a bill on internal trade and consumer protection on Thursday.

The law aims at tightening penalties and fines imposed on offenders who manipulate prices and monopolize commodities.

Owners of commercial, industrial and service businesses would now be required to publicly announce the prices of commodities and goods while committing to the rules of supply and demand and legal competition.

According to the law, a prison sentence of no less than six months and/or a fine of 250,000 SYP would also be imposed for those selling contaminated human and animal food products, and polluted agricultural crops.
