Assad Urges UN to Assist in Restoration of Palmyra

President Bashar al-Assad has called on UN organizations to support the Syrian government in its restoration of the UNESCO-listed ancient city of Palmyra.

In a letter to Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday, Assad thanked the UN chief for welcoming the Syrian army’s recapture of Palmyra from the Islamic State group last Sunday.

Assad stressed Syria’s readiness to cooperate with all sincere efforts aimed at combating terrorism, adding that the present moment might be the best time to accelerate the collective war against terrorism.
