De Mistura Optimistic Dialogue Can Resume in Geneva ‘Soon’

UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura on Wednesday said that the stalled peace talks must be resumed as “soon" as possible and without delay to avoid losing momentum.

Speaking to journalists in the Austrian capital Vienna, the envoy voiced optimism that a new round of negotiations can be resumed because it is obvious there can be no military solution to the crisis.

De Mistura also asked negotiators to “bear in mind” that the month-long fasting month of Ramadan will begin on June 6 “in that part of the world.”

On Tuesday, world powers had called for resuming the dialogue in Geneva, strengthening the cessation of hostilities agreement, and having the “armed opposition” groups distance themselves geographically and ideologically from the Islamic State group and Nusra Front.
