Pope Francis Calls for End to War in Letter to President Assad

President Assad receives letter from Pope expressing heartfelt sympathy with Syria and condemning all forms of extremism and terrorism

President Bashar al-Assad received a letter Monday from Pope Francis, through Cardinal Mario Zenari, expressing his heartfelt sympathy for Syria and its people in light of the difficult circumstances the country is facing.

The Vatican said the letter condemned all forms of extremism and terrorism.

The Pope called for uniting all efforts to put an end to the war in Syria and restore peace to the country so it can remain a model for coexistence among cultures and religions.

For his part, Assad stressed that Syria is determined to restore security and stability and is continuing to achieve success through reconciliations.
