Russian-Iranian-Turkish Meeting Calls for Respecting Syrian Sovereignty

Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif stressed that Tuesday’s meeting between Iran, Russia and Turkey stressed the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and that a political solution is the only way out of the crisis.

Zarif indicated in a statement on Wednesday that a number of points were discussed at the tripartite meeting held in the Russian capital which were agreed on and released in the form of a joint statement.

He clarified that Iran, Russia and Turkey are seeking to pave the way for a cessation of hostilities, delivering humanitarian assistance and starting political talks among the Syrian parties.

He also underlined the necessity of delivering humanitarian aid to all Syrian areas.

In a relevant context, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura welcomed the joint statement, saying that it is useful for resuming the upcoming Syrian-Syrian dialogue in Geneva on February 8.
