The Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR) has documented the deaths of 528 civilians as a result of attacks on schools and educational institutions in Syria between the eruption of the revolution in March 2011 to this August.

The SNHR said in a report that among those victims there were 171 children and 128 women. It said that there were 4,360 incidents of attacks hitting 1,356 schools during this period, which caused about half of them to go out of service.

According to the SNHR, Assad regime forces are responsible for 996 attacks against schools, while Russian forces were responsible for 16 attacks. International coalition forces committed 87 attacks on schools, while other parties in Syria bear the responsibly for the remaining 257 attacks.

The SNHR said that since the eruption of the Syrian revolution, children have been subjected to a number of attacks at the hands of all active parties, primarily from the regime, manifested in acts of killing, arrest, forcible conscription, sexual violence, and deprivation from one or both parents, as well as displacement and deprivation from school.

The United Nations estimates that more than two million children have been deprived of education since March 2011.
