Transcript Of Press Stakeout Of United Nations Special Envoy For Syria Mr. Geir O. Pedersen After Meeting With Minister Of Foreign Affairs And Expatriates Mr. Faisal Mekdad

I just now came from a meeting with the His Excellency Foreign Minister Faisal Mikdad. We had a very good meeting. We discussed a range of issues related to the implementation of Security Council resolution 2254. We obviously spent some time on the very serious socio-economic and humanitarian challenges affecting the Syrian people, including also issues related to the internally displaced and of course also the situation for the refugees.

Please, let me continue. Then, we also, I also was briefed in quite some detail on the latest amnesty from President Assad, and I am very much looking forward to being kept informed on the progress on the implementation for that amnesty. As I said before that amnesty has potential, and we are looking forward to see how it develops.

Then, obviously, we also discussed the Constitutional Committee. As you know, we will have a meeting of the Constitutional Committee in Geneva on the 28th of May, where we will have the 15 members of the civil society, the 15 members of the government, and the 15 members of the opposition SNC. I am also hopeful that that will be a positive meeting that can help us to bring us forward, so that we can start to see with the different aspects of the crisis that we now see some confidence-building measures that will be a key also to further the implementation of Security Council resolution 2254.

Question: Mr. Pedersen, what external international pressures on the course of the Constitutional Committee?

Mr. Pedersen: Listen the Constitutional Committee is, of course, working according to its terms of reference that has been agreed upon between the two parties, the government and the opposition. And I think that we are making sure that we are upholding those principles.
