Syria has slammed what it called the “outrageous duplicity” of some U.N. Security Council permanent member countries for their support for terrorism in Syria.
Syria's condemnation came in the form of identical letters that the Foreign and Expatriates Ministry addressed to the U.N. Secretary General, President of the U.N. Security Council and the High Commissioner for Human Rights, concerning new butchery committed by “terrorist groups affiliated to the Nusra Front, Liwa al-Islam and the so-called ‘Islamic Front’ in Adra city in Damascus countryside”.
More than 100 citizens were slaughtered on 11 December Adra city, a safe town hosting citizens displaced from neighboring areas, the letters said.
The letters said terrorists burned down the homes of government employees in the town, shot dead others and mutilated their bodies, and held many others at the city's bakery after rigging it with explosives.
The terrorists stoles dozens of tons of flour and wheat from the locals in the town and kidnapped a large number of civilians, locking them in basements to use as human shields, the ministry added in its letters.
The ministry referred to a “host of evidence which Syria has previously alerted to, mainly the continued incitement campaigns against Syria by media outlets funded by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, using radical Wahhabi fatwas to instigate fitna (strife) and killing”.
The letters cited calls made by Ayman al-Zawahiri to Al-Qaeda-affiliated organizations to head for Syria in order to carry out suicide attacks from more than 80 countries around the world.
The ministry warned that the “ruling regime in Saudi Arabia is inciting terrorism in violation of relevant international resolutions, and the Saudi officials are bragging, in brazen-faced statements, about providing financial and logistical support to Al-Qaeda elements and training them in countries neighboring Syria.”
In their capacity as permanent members, some UNSC members should have abstained from supporting terrorism in Syria, the letters said and urged those countries to play ''a more effective role in combating the armed terrorist groups and having them and their supporters held to account.''
