Syria will insist on a U.N. investigation into the role of Qatari intelligence in the abduction of U.N. personnel in the occupied Syrian Golan, Syria's Permanent Representative to the U.N. Bashar al-Jaafari said Monday.
In an interview with Russia's Novosti news agency, al-Jaafari said that a person from Doha had used a Qatari phone number to contact the people who abducted U.N. personnel and explained to them where to go, what to say and what to do about the abductees.
He said that this information had been confirmed by an email sent by a U.N. employee working in Damascus to the U.N. headquarters. He said the email was circulated at the highest levels at the U.N. and had been sent to the Secretary-General.
In a statement to the U.N. on 16 May, Al-Jaafari expressed regret that there had been no reaction from the U.N. Secretary-General or his official representative, after alerting his to this "very alarming matter."
He noted that the matter had been discussed with U.N. Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, Herve Ladsous, who said he was not aware of the matter, but promised an investigation. As yet there has been no follow-up.
Al-Jaafari said he was certain Qatari intelligence agencies are deeply involved in maneuvering the abduction of the U.N. Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF) personnel operating in Golan, and said terrorist groups present in the Golan receive instructions from Qatari intelligence as well as assist Israel.
