The general coordinator for the High Negotiations Committee of the Syrian opposition, Riyad Hijab, said that President Bashar al-Assad will have no role in Syria’s future and that he will be punished, saying he has “imprisoned 1.7 million Syrians, something not done even by the Nazis.”
In a press conference held in Geneva, Hijab said it is impossible to find a political solution in Syria when the criminal Assad remains in power.
One day after the Syrian opposition announced the delay of their participation in the Geneva talks, Hijab added: “Our decision to delay our participation in the Geneva means suspension.”
He added: “We took a decision yesterday to suspend our participation in the talks. We will not be in the United Nations while our people are suffering and dying under siege and bombardment.”
The opposition figure urged world powers to hold an urgent meeting to reevaluate a truce which he said is no longer holding.
“I call for a meeting of the foreign ministers of the International Syria Support Group to view and reevaluate humanitarian measures and also to evaluate the truce process which has ended,” Hijab told journalists.
He indicated that the High Committee will exit the talks but that some of its experts will remain behind to hold meetings.
