National Coalition: The Iranian Initiative is a Desperate Attempt to Prolong the Life of the Regime

The Syrian National Coalition rejected a newly launched Iranian initiative to solve the crisis in Syria, branding it as ‘overdue.”

The Coalition said in a statement, a copy of which was obtained by the Syrian Observer, that “as the free forces of the Syrian people accomplish one decisive political and military victory after another, the regime and its allies keep on launching lackluster and overdue political initiatives.  The Iranian initiative represents one example of these desperate attempts to throw a lifeline to the inevitably sinking ship of the Assad regime.”

The statement came as a late response from the Coalition to an initiative presented Sunday by the Iranian government regarding a step-by-step peace plan for Syria capped by elections that presumably could usher in a new leader in Damascus.

The statement added that Iranian regime “still considers this revolution as a mere political dispute between two parties,” accusing the regime in Tehran of “failing to recognize that one party is the executioner while the other is the victim.”

“The Iranian regime continues to offer proposals, which do not provide a real solution to stop the bloodshed in Syria, and do not recognize the right of the Syrian People to decide their destiny and choose the political regime they want, a free and democratic one,” the statement added.

The Iranian proposal was looked at by observers as an indicator of the limited options available to Iran to try to preserve perhaps its most critical alliance in the Middle East, where Tehran has far more rivals than friends.

The statement added that the Iranian regime will “never be able to prevent the triumph of Syrians nor will it be able stop the ouster of the Assad regime.”

It called on the Iranian regime to consider “the future of relations between the Syrian and Iranian people,” as the Syrian regime is falling apart, and in the end “only Syria and the Syrian people will remain.”
