A local reconciliation initiative was launched in Daraa on Sunday by up to 1,000 locals and senior figures from the southern province.
The initiative calls on people who have taken up arms against the state to lay down their weapons in order to settle their legal status and return to normal life, according to a statement.
The effort is to include the formation of a working group of members of parliament, municipal councils and popular figures from the province to work alongside the government to achieve reconciliations in areas where residents are willing.
Local committees will also be formed to help communicate with senior figures in all towns and villages where gunmen are active in order to restore security and safety to the areas.
