As part of its diverse humanitarian relief efforts to help tens of thousands of Syrians, the Qatari Red Crescent has begun an environmental and health program to by removing thousands of tons of accumulated waste in the streets and alleys of Aleppo.
This is the first stage of a waste removal project, started after concerns were raised about the health crisis affecting the city as a result of the waste, in February.
Waste and affiliated health issues were declared the biggest humanitarian problem afflicting the city. This is due to the presence of the landfill in inaccessible areas on battles front lines, the shortage of garbage removal vehicles, the lack of diesel fuel to run them. Instability in areas housing displaced has made the situation in the city unlivable, with accumulated mountains of waste – piling up daily – putting millions of people at the risk of epidemic and disease. IN particular, the spread of Leishmaniasis, sand flies is prevalent, while about 20,000 injuries have been reported in the city.
