Russia’s Foreign Ministry has said that Iranian nuclear negotiations and the crises in Syria and Ukraine were the main topics of discussion at a meeting between Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and US Secretary of State John Kerry in the Austrian capital of Vienna on Tuesday.
Following a telephone call between the US and Russian presidents on June 25, Lavrov and Kerry had “extensively” analyzed the prospects of settling the crisis in Syria, according to Russia Today news website.
According to a statement issued by the Russian foreign ministry, Lavrov stressed there is currently no substitute for a political solution in Syria, which can only be reached by the international community standing side-by-side with Syrian national forces against terrorist groups.
After meeting with Kerry on Tuesday, Lavrov announced that Moscow and Washington agreed defeating ISIS would require more effective counterterrorism efforts.
Lavrov also declared that the US has agreed to continue communications with Russia regarding the combating of terrorism in the Middle East with the participation of regional states.
