Syrian National Coalition President Khaled Khoja stressed his commitment to a political solution in Syria in a phone call with US Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday morning.
During the phone call, the two officials discussed the latest developments in Syria, assessed the country’s political situation and explored the nature of the transitional period.
Kerry stressed that the Geneva statement should be the reference point for any political settlement in Syria, reaffirming Washington’s position that President Bashar al-Assad should not have a role in the future of Syria.
The top US diplomat stressed that US efforts are targeted towards ending the killing inside Syria, alleviating the suffering of the Syrian people, and helping to move towards stability as soon as possible.
Khoja, for his part, affirmed his commitment to a political solution based on the Geneva statement, adding that he will continue his efforts of uniting the political opposition and the military forces.
The Syrian opposition leader underlined the importance of activating UN Security Council resolution 2165, which demands the provision of humanitarian aid to besieged areas.
Khoja reiterated Coalition’s full cooperation with international efforts to reach a just political solution that realizes the aspirations of the Syrian people in achieving and moving towards a democratic future.
