The dismissal decision of the head of Assistance Coordination Unit and Health Minister over accusations of the involvement in deadly vaccinations that led to death of 37 children three weeks ago in Idleb countryside, is void, the opposition legal committee said.
A Zaman al-Wasl source said lawmakers within the Syrian National Coalition agreed the decision of General Secretary Nasr al-Hariri to sack Suhair Atassi, head of ACU and Adnan Hazzouri, the Health Minister in Caretaker government, was illegal.
Atassi, the controversial opposition figure, said in a statement posted online last week that the decision does not fall under the jurisdiction of the Coalition’s Political Body, saying it was "not effective and not applicable".
The recent deaths of Syrian children after receiving measles vaccinations was the result of a "mistake" by a non-governmental partner who mixed in a muscle relaxant meant for anesthesia, a spokesman for the U.N. Secretary-General said, according to AP.
The Syria conflict between the government and rebel groups, now in its fourth year, has caused the collapse of its health system in contested areas. Nationwide vaccination efforts have been thrown into disarray, and polio re-emerged in parts of Syria last year.
