Pedersen to Visit Damascus Ahead of Constitutional Committee

The UN Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, is to visit the Syrian capital Damascus to meet Assad regime government officials on Oct. 15 and 16, 2019.

During his trip to Damascus, Pedersen will meet Foreign Minister Walid Muallem to discuss the “final details” before the start of the first Syrian constitutional committee meeting on Oct. 30, 2019, according to the Russian TASS news agency on Tuesday.

Coinciding with that, the opposition Syrian High Negotiations Committee held a large meeting on Wednesday in the Saudi capital Riyadh including more than 100 people who were members of the committee and their representatives on the constitutional committee, as well as members of the consultative committee in the constitutional committee.

The High Negotiations committee president Nasr al-Hariri held a press conference after the meeting in which he said that the constitutional committee will not be an alternative to the transitional governing authority in Syria, in response to the criticisms leveled against the constitutional committee’s work, adding that “it [the constitutional committee] will have no meaning without the release of prisoners.”

During the conference, Hariri called for “real” international support to find a political solution in parts of northwest Syria, where the Syrian regime has been carrying out a military campaign since April, which has led to a collapse of the humanitarian situation in the area.
