Five Die From Hunger in Yarmouk Camp

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights announced on Friday that five people have died from hunger in the Yarmouk Palestinian refugee camp in Damascus.

The camp has witnessed daily battles and a siege campaign lasting over a year, that have forced tens of thousands of its inhabitants to leave.
UNRWA, the U.N Palestinian refugee agency, called for help for the people in Yarmouk in December.

The Observatory said the five people who had died included an old man, a handicapped person and a woman, because of the shortage of food and medicines due to the siege.

UNRWA has not been able to enter the camp since September, although the organization has asked the army and all the fighting parties to allow access for humanitarian organizations to deliver aid.

UNRWA said in its statement on 20 Decemeber that living conditions in the camp are deteriorating rapidly and that 20,000 people are still besieged inside.

“If the situation remained as it is now, it will be too late for saving the lives of thousands of people, some of them are children,” the statement said.
