2,000 Arabs, 200 Foreigners Gain Syrian Nationality

Informed sources in the Ministry of Internal Affairs said that the number of Arabs who obtained Syrian nationality in 2013 was about 2,000 people, including 1,200 women.

 

Al-Watan newspaper reported that most of the Arab women obtained Syrian nationality through marriage to Syrian men.

 

The same sources said that "the number of foreigners who obtained nationality is about 200", although they added that conditions are very strict and that Syrian nationality law requires that the foreigner should have Syrian origins to be able to obtain the Syrian nationality.

 

The sources noted that Syrian women cannot give their nationality to her husband and children, while Syrian men can.

 

Legislative decree number 276 of 1,069 considers the person Syrian if he was born in Syria or has a Syrian father. The third article of the decree says that in the case of a person born in Syria and with a Syrian mother, but who cannot prove the identity of his father, both the father and mother are considered anonymous. The same applies to those born in Syria but cannot prove their parents identities.
