Bashar Assad’s sister Bushra has asked the Court of the European Union in Luxembourg to remove her name from the lists of sanctions imposed on the Assad regime.
The EU sanctions prevent Bushra from travelling to the EU’s countries and have frozen her funds and assets. The court rejected the Bushra’s request, and did not agree to the evidence she provided which repudiates her brother Bashar and maintains that she is not part of the Assad regime.
Bushra's husband Asif Shawkat was killed in 2012, and that she is now living with her children in the United Arab Emirates.
The European Court has stated that the fact that Bushra is Assad's sister is enough alone to confirm the association with the Assad regime, especially that Syria has been ruled by the Assad house for decades.
Obviously, this family relationship entails solidarity between Bushra and her brother. She has tried to appeal against the EU sanctions against her and 178 individuals of the Assad regime claiming they were not officially informed of these sanctions. The EU’s court rejected the appeal, stating that EU’s decisions were published in a large number of media outlets.
