The Working for Palestinians in Syria human rights group has confirmed that 80,000 Palestinian refugees have fled Syria between March 2011 and May 29, 2015.
The rights group issued a statement claiming around 80,000 Palestinian refugees are said to have fled Syria – 10,000 of them escaping to Jordan, 51,000 to Lebanon, and 6,000 to Egypt – according to statistics obtained by the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East.
In the statement, the group also noted that 27,933 Palestinian refugees had arrived in Europe from Syria over the past four years, while 875 Palestinians are now detained in regime prisons, with 393 of them believed to have died under torture.
Around half a million Palestinian refugees were reported to be living in 12 refugee camps inside Syria, the largest among them was Yarmouk refugee camp in the south of Damascus, currently facing a crippling two-year siege.
A number of Palestinian activists and politicians have warned of the displacement of Palestinians in Syria, stressing that these operations are in the interests of Israel, which is working to abolish the Palestinian right of return.
