Putin Says Russian Stance on Syria ‘Firm’, Goads Turkey

Moscow’s stance towards Syria is firm and principled, Russian President Vladimir Putin has stressed, adding that no alternative exists for a political solution to the crisis in Syria.

During his annual presidential conference in Moscow on Thursday, Putin said no one can tell the Syrians who should lead them, claiming that this is both illogical and incorrect.

Regarding Russia’s military operation in Syria, Putin stressed that operations will continue until they fulfil their objectives, adding that the recent downing of the Russian fighter jet over Syrian territory was an “act of aggression”, noting Turkey’s lack of contact with Russian officials following the incident.

Russia has deployed the S-400 anti-aircraft systems since the event, said Putin. “If before, Turkey had constantly violated Syrian airspace, let them try it now.”

Speaking on Russia’s relations with Turkey, Putin said, “Experience shows it is hard for us to come to common ground, or it is practically impossible. Even when we say 'Yes', they stab us in the back due to unclear reasons. Therefore, I do not see a state-level prospect.”
