Syria Calls For Immediate Action Against State Backers of Terrorism Following Wave of Attacks

Syria’s foreign ministry said the recent spate of terrorist atrocities throughout the country is aimed at lifting the sagging morale of fighters following a series of recent military wins by the Syrian army and its allies.

In a statement to the United Nations, the ministry said Syria will push ahead with its counterterrorism efforts as part of its duty to protect Syrian citizens, affirming that further terrorist attacks won’t diminish its resolve to reach a political settlement to the crisis through an intra-Syrian dialogue.

Twin terrorist bombings rocked Sayyida Zainab in the Damascus countryside on Saturday claiming the lives of at least 12 people.

The ministry said a car bomb was detonated in a busy vegetable market while and a suicide bomber blew himself up amid a gathering of civilians at the city’s entrance.

Militants from the Islamic State group also killed 40 civilians in the village of Ghandoura in the countryside of Aleppo province on Friday, while indiscriminate shelling continued throughout neighborhoods in Aleppo city by Al-Qaeda’s Nusra Front and other allied groups.

The ministry stressed that the violence carried out by these terrorist groups is being committed with financial and military support from the governments of Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

The ministry urged the UN Security Council to take immediate measures against the countries backing terrorism, explaining that terrorism is a stamp that applies to anyone who takes up arms against the state to kill or intimidate innocent civilians.
