President Bashar al-Assad has called on Syria’s corruption watchdog to double efforts to combat negligence, poor performance and corruption as a result of the war, urging officials to take a zero-tolerance stance on offenders.
During a meeting on Sunday with Chairwoman of the Central Commission for Inspection and Control Judge Amina al-Shammat, Assad said that combating the spread of corruption should be accompanied by more effective monitoring of the performance of government institutions, adding that no party which is in a position of responsibility or has business relations with the state should be allowed to intervene in the work of the Commission.
The president also stressed the importance of developing the working mechanism of the Commission, saying that the effective and adequate performance of any institution requires the prevention of corruption from exploiting its cadres.
In turn, Shammat affirmed that fighting shortcomings in government institutions and ending the waste of public money will be at the top of the Commission’s priorities, stressing her determination to achieve the aim of the Commission in light of the current circumstances facing the country.
