The opening of the “al-Shahba” satellite channel was announced today by opposition figures. The channel’s administration says that al-Shahba, which operates mainly in the city of Aleppo, is an independent channel not beholden to any military faction or political party, and that it reports events from the city of Aleppo as a purely professional media outlet.
The channel constitutes the first opposition channel in Syria that broadcasts from inside Syrian territory— in clear defiance of regime forces. One of al-Shahba’s administrators says the “channel touches the suffering of the Syrian street and embodies its concerns, pains, and hopes. We chose to be inside Syria to communicate with all the media organizations and political and military factions more easily and to be with the Syrian people in all their suffering from the brutal military campaigns led by regime forces. Most of our channel’s crew consists of reporters who have been working since the beginning of the Syrian revolution in this arena. They were, and still are, on the ground in Syria.”
