Syria has welcomed the appointment of Staffan de Mistura as the new U.N. Special Envoy, saying it believes in a political solution to the crisis in the country through Syrian-led dialogue among Syrians.
“We hope that de Mistura’s approach will be built on objectivity, honesty and the rules of the international law, under the principles and goals of the U.N. Charter,” the Ministry of Foreign and Expatriates Affairs said in a letter to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon on Wednesday.
“On top of those principles,” the Ministry added, “respect for the national sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs and respect for the Syrian people’s will and choices.”
The U.N. Secretary General appointed de Mistura as the U.N. Special Envoy for Syria on 10 July after the resignation of former envoy Lakhdar Brahimi in May.
