Minister of State for Environment Affairs, Nazira Serkis, said that a funding plan to make biosafety projects in Syria has been established, benefiting from financial grants offered by the Global Environmental Facility and the Nairobi Office of the U.N. Environment Program (UNEP).
In a statement to journalists, Serkis said the ministry is currently coordinating with the technical director of the UNEP biosafety programs and projects in order to carry out such projects, in addition to preparing the 3rd National Report on the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
She noted that Syria is the first country in the Arab world and the 15th worldwide out of 158 countries which joined the Nagoya-Kuala Lumpur Protocol, an agreement with the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
On November 1, Syria received a grant from the UNEP to establish a website that could help facilitate the implementation of the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety.
