Kurdish Forces Clash With Regime Security in Hassakeh City

Clashes erupted between regime and Kurdish Asayish security forces in the city of Hassakeh on Wednesday in response to a dispute over who will guard the exams center, a local Kurdish activist reported.

A regime security member was killed and dozens of others, including civilians, were injured in the fighting which took place in the city’s central market between Qamishli Street and Filistin Street.

Activist “al-Ali” told Zaman al-Wasl that the clashes erupted when the Kurdish militia attempted to enter the exams center in the Mwahada Syriac School, which is guarded by regime forces near Filistin Street in the center of the city.

The activist pointed out that the lieutenant in charge of the center prvented the Kurdish forces from entering the building, which led to a dispute between the two parties. The ensuing clashes resulted in the death of one security member while several others were also injured from both sides.

Students were performing their biology exam in the surrounding buildings at the time of the clashes, while several civilians were injured in the fighting and transported to hospital, al-Ali added.

The Asayish forces said on its official Facebook page that, “the regime mercenaries are shooting heavy fire in the central market in Hassakeh city and they are spreading panic between locals and civilians.” The page provided no further details.

Similar clashes took place on April 20 between Asayish and pro-regime National Defense Forces (NDF) militia in the center of Qamishli city north of Hassakeh, killing 17 Kurdish fighters and 20 others from regime and NDF forces.

The April clashes also killed 17 civilians, ending on the fourth day in a truce and exchange of captives.

Regime, Kurdish and Islamic State forces control Hassakeh province. Kurdish militants control the largest area while regime forces primarily control security checkpoints and military divisions in the surroundings of Hassakeh and Qamishli cities.
