Reknown relief doctor Dr Anas al-Akhras passed away in Homs, activists from the embattled city reported on Wednesday.
Homs activists had been campaigning for an urgent medical transfer out of Homs for the prominent human rights activist, to receive treatment for a serious illness. Activists said there is no longer an urgent need.
The famous endocrinologist died after a long battle with intestinal disease. Just weeks ago, Zaman al-Wasl published an appeal from Human Rights organizations to help him out of Homs to receive proper treatment. Akhras had treated and assisted the people of Homs under seige for over 18 months.
Akhras fell ill five months ago and had suffered a general deterioration in his health since including decreased appetite and severe weight loss.
