The opposition Union of the Syrian Revolution Tansiqiat claimed to have killed three of Bashar Assad's bodyguards in an attack on his motorcade in Damascus on Thursday.
Assad was travelling to a mosque in the capital for morning prayers for the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, the group reported.
In a statement, the Union said there was a high security presence outside the Al-Shami military hospital in the Malki neighborhood of Damascus following the attack, proving a number of high-ranking Republican Guard generals were killed and wounded during the attack.
Activists documented the killing of Colonel Ahmed Ali, Lieutenant Colonel Azzam Merhej and Major Salman Abboud, the Zaman al-Wasl opposition website reported.
